Finally, a dream come true: Bone surgery is reinvented

Our story is a very personal one. A close relative of one of our founders, Dr. Alfredo Bruno, once had to undergo a complicated jaw surgery. As the son of a physician, Dr. Bruno had always had a healthy respect for surgical interventions, and wanted to learn as much as he could about this procedure beforehand. His research led him to Prof. Hans-Florian Zeilhofer, the head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital in Basel. In response to Dr. Bruno’s inquiry as to why bone wasn’t cut to precision with a laser, Prof. Zeilhofer replied, “We have been attempting to do this for 50 years now, but, as yet, no method for laser cutting has been developed. So, just like our ancestors thousands of years ago, we continue cut bone with a saw!” Shortly, thereafter Dr. Bruno began working intensively to find a better solution for the type of surgical intervention his relative had undergone. Together with Prof. Zeilhofer, Dr. Jürgens and Prof. Cattin from the University of Basel, Dr. Bruno founded Advanced Osteotomy Tools, or AOT for short, in 2010. Each founder brought wide-ranging knowledge to the company in the fields of laser physics, robotics and orthopaedic surgery. The result of their combined efforts is “CARLO®” (Cold Ablation Robot-guided Laser Osteotome,) a remarkable innovation in bone surgery. CARLO® uses a new cold-laser technology that cuts bone without contact, without heat, and with absolute precision.
